The Effect of Core Exercises on Technical Skills in Adolescent Female Volleyball Players

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effects of core exercises, divided into 10-week periods, on certain technical skills in female volleyball players aged 15-18. Twenty-eight female volleyball players who had been involved in volleyball for at least three years and who trained regularly five days a week participated in the study. An experimental research model, one of the quantitative research methods, was used in this study. The athletes were then randomly divided into two groups. The experimental group (n=14) underwent 90-minute classic volleyball training sessions with an intensity of 60-80% four days a week for 10 weeks, supplemented by 30-40 minutes of core exercises (VKG) before training. while the control group (n=14) only underwent classic volleyball training (VG) with an intensity of 60-80 units. Volleyball skill tests (serve, spike, and block) were administered to both groups before and after training. The Shapiro-Wilk and Levene's tests were used to determine whether the data followed a normal distribution and whether the variances were homogeneous. The T-test was used for comparing independent groups (Independent Samples), and the T-test was used for comparing dependent groups (Paired Samples) (p<0.05). Statistical analyses revealed significant differences in the mean pre- and post-test scores of the volleyball skill tests (serve, spike, and block) for both the core exercise group and the volleyball training group (p<.05). However, it was determined that the development percentages were higher in the core exercise group (Table 5). Furthermore, it was determined that there was a significant difference in favour of the experimental group (VKG) in the final test score averages of the volleyball skill tests (serve, spike and block) between the independent variables (p<.05). In conclusion, it was determined that the 10-week core exercise programme designed for adolescent female volleyball players aged 15-18 had a significant effect on the serve, spike, and block accuracy rates of the athletes.
