Abstract

Success and performance in sports depend on both physical and psychological capacity and preparedness. In this regard, athletes must cultivate discipline and cope effectively with potential challenges. Various forms of mental training can contribute to physiological and psychological performance indicators or outcomes. While traditional sports psychology techniques for enhancing elite athletes' performance focus on controlling internal factors, the popularity of mindfulness-based interventions has grown significantly in recent times. Mindfulness aims to approach athletes' internal experiences with awareness and acceptance. The aim of this review is to examine the effects of mindfulness-based practices in sport psychology on sport performance.Several studies have demonstrated that mindfulness-based interventions are effective in increasing athletes' levels of awareness and improving their athletic performance. Mindfulness has been found to facilitate stress management and enhance focus during sports competitions. Furthermore, mindfulness-based interventions have shown potential in reducing the risk of injuries. This review provides important findings concerning the role of mindfulness, which focuses on athletes' internal experiences and employs an accepting approach, in enhancing athletic performance. Further experimental studies are crucial to enhance knowledge and understanding in this area. Sports psychology experts and coaches should support athletes' internal experiences by demonstrating the benefits of mindfulness-based interventions. Integrating such practices into training processes can not only enhance athletes' performances but also help them experience sports in a more enjoyable and meaningful way.
